Split it your way

Custom shares are relative weights, not amounts of money. Weight 2 receives twice the share of weight 1. A 25/75 agreement becomes weights 1 and 3; 20/30/50 becomes 2, 3 and 5.

A 25/75 dinner

Dinner costs USD 12. Ana paid USD 5 and Ben paid USD 7. With weights Ana 1 and Ben 3, Ana's share is USD 3 and Ben's is USD 9. Ana gets USD 2 back, so Ben pays Ana USD 2.

Enter it in the calculator

  1. Add Ana and Ben, then enter USD 12 and the expense date.
  2. Select More than one person paid and enter Ana 5 and Ben 7.
  3. Choose Custom and set Ana to 1 and Ben to 3.
  4. Select See the split and check that Ben owes Ana USD 2.

Leave someone out

In the browser, use weight 0 or turn off a person's chip to exclude them from that expense. In ChatGPT tool inputs, omitted people are excluded and included weights must be positive integers. Each expense can have its own included people and weights.

Keep amounts and shares separate

Who paid and who shared are different questions. A payer can cover an expense without sharing it, and someone can share a cost without paying upfront. Payer contributions must equal the full expense amount. Changing a share changes what someone owes, not what they already paid.

For percentages that produce fractions of a cent, the rounding policy allocates the remainder consistently. See equal bill splitting for the simpler case.
